How this song started out was really the two chord structure from the Bm7 to the Asus4. I decided to tune the top E down to D, this just meant I could have a more open sound and when strumming the Bm shape I use in the song it meant the high wouldn’t create any discord.
Tip: If you are playing in D tuning either of the E strings down to a D can help give a little bit of variety and open up some more possibilities.
While playing through the chords a thought just came to mind and I vocalized it in the form of the first couple of lines:
This world is what you make of it my son,
So take your time, take the chance, live your life without regrets.
So that sort of idea became my lyrical theme and focus as it were. So I continued writing and the following came out:
This world has a lot to offer my friend
You can be poor or have it all but try not to loose your soul
Or be consumed by all it holds dear
Keep your head held high guard your heart try not to have a a part
In selfishness and pride and gluttony
Have selfless faith integrity, find the joy in liberty
And that was all I had. Wasn’t too sure where to take it but knew I had to sort out the structure. So I thought maybe it would be a good idea to have pre-chorus and then go into the chorus. So I looked at the lyrics I had and thought what sort of words would fit after them. So I thought it is really advice you are giving to someone on how to live their life why would you give that advice? So they can have a clear conscience and piece of mind. So the pre-chorus was Bm7 G2 A and the lyrics came in the form of
In this you will find.
Peace of Mind.
Simple but I thought that was enough. And when you listen to it you will hear the bass notes in the guitar are the notes of the sung melody. And it wasn’t too long till I had a chorus idea after that:
This world is what you make of it
So don’t make a mess of it
Live lives full of love
And thats all I had. Not quite finished, I couldn’t think of a last line to complete the sentiment I was thinking of there so I went away and came back and changed the line “Live lives full of Love” to “Live life open to receive” so I could then conclude with “love joy, peace and liberty“
So now I had that I had to think of the story the verses were telling. I kinda of had a whole section where I I am giving a friend advise but the only advice I could to my son was to take his time and take the chance and to live life with no regrets so what else could I say to my son was the thoughts I then went down. So these were the thoughts and words that came from thinking on that
Don’t dwell upon the mistakes you may do
This life’s too short for you to live a life that’s focused on the past
Just lift your eyes and look to the sky
Grace can be found, given the chance in the least likely circumstance
And then I thought I should have a third person to give advice to. So I thought maybe a female friend, loved one, spouse or even daughter. And these are the lines that came from that direction of thinking:
This world has a lot of pressures my dear
To have success look your best and be better than all the rest
But never give yourself for anything less
Than the best that there is for you, you deserve to love and be loved too
And be told each day that you are beautiful
Just as you are you don’t have to change the light in your eyes are bright like the stars.
And that is basically the whole song. Verse one, telling my son to live with no regrets, not to think on his mistakes and remember grace can always be found. Verse two: Telling a friend he can have as much or as little as he want but to try not to loose his soul in the process and get caught up in what the world holds dear but to have integrity. And to my wife or a female friend to not let the pressures of life get on top of her, that she is precious and valuable and not to settle for anything less than the best this world can offer and that she is beautiful as she is.
So that’s my thoughts as I went about writing the song. So here it is, followed by the complete lyrics in order.
